Service Learning Project
During my first semester, I was able to have the opportunity to take part in a service learning project. Classmates and I volunteered to help with the set up for Buddy Walk. We got to the area to begin set up around lunch time. We were presented with the tasks of setting up tents, tables, and chairs. It did not take us a very long time to finish these tasks since there were so many of us. It was great to hear the feedback from the organization, telling us that we were a huge help and great students. It felt really nice to be able to give back to such a great organization.
I learned that service learning was teaching us to become involved in the community by providing meaningful service. I had no idea about the opportunities that service learning would give students. I learned that volunteering can go a long way. It felt so great to be able to help out with this organization. It gave me a sense of fulfillment that I was doing something good for the community. Buddy Walk was designed as a public awareness event for those with Down Syndrome. I wish I would have signed up to actually participate in the event instead of setting up. This project really changed my view of volunteering, and I plan to continue volunteering to give back to the community.
