Reviewing the workout plan and preparing my client for the session.

INShape

During my time in the INShape program, I worked one-on-one with my client to help improve her overall strength, endurance, and confidence with physical activity. Across multiple weeks, I planned and led structured exercise sessions that included resistance training, dynamic warm-ups, and flexibility training. Each session plan was designed to focus on proper exercise order, gradually increasing intensity, and targeting major muscle groups.

One strategy that I really focused on was making the workouts both enjoyable and effective. My client responded well to a structured routine that incorporated circuit-style training, while emphasizing strength through movements such as trap bar squats, Romanian deadlifts, and cable rows. I made sure to closely observe my client's response to each exercise and adjust intensity or modify movements as needed. This allowed me to keep the sessions challenging while ensuring my client maintained proper form and felt comfortable.

Reflection

One of the biggest takeaways from INShape was how much actually goes into working one-on-one with a client. It is not just about having a plan, but rather being able to adjust the plan based on how the client is feeling, performing, and responding in the moment. Though I came in with a structured workout plan, I had to stay flexible and make changes when needed to keep sessions safe and effective.

Working with my client helped me to improve my coaching and communication skills. I had to be clear and intentional when demonstrating exercises, giving cues, and providing feedback. Over time, this helped me to build a relationship with my client as well as building her confidence. I also learned to pay attention the the small details, such as balance, form, and exercise selection, ensuring that the workout was tailored to my client.

During my time in INShape, I learned how to balance structure with flexibility. While having a plan is important, I realized that no two sessions would be exactly the same. I had to adjust exercises, workout pace, and intensity depending on how my client was feeling that day. This allowed me to understand the importance of meeting the client where they are, rather than forcing a plan that may not be appropriate in the moment.

My time in INShape pushed me to step more into a leadership role and trust my background in exercise science. During the first couple sessions, I was focused on following my plan exactly, but over time I became more confident in modifying exercises, making decisions, and guiding sessions more independently. I was able to grow not only as a coach, but in my ability to think critically and adapt quickly.

This experience strengthened my interest in potentially pursuing personal training in the future. Being able to work one-on-one, build relationships, and see my client's progress over time made the experience feel extremely rewarding. I realized that I enjoy not just the physical side of training, but also watching my client become more confident, capable, and independent over time. I believe personal training is something that I would love to do alongside my long-term goal of going into exercise physiology.
